Kobe Bryant joined Nike in 2003 and spent his first two seasons wearing Air Zoom Huarache silhouettes. In his third, he received his own Nike Kobe signature shoe, beginning one of the most storied footwear lines in basketball history.

The first two Kobe models were designed by Ken Link for release in early 2006 and 2007 respectively. Both featured durable leather uppers and supportive high-cut collars, with the OG introducing a mobility-enhancing heel cutout and stabilising TPU wrap and the Kobe 2 adding a lockdown ankle strap alongside a flexible, Nike-Free-inspired outsole. Their midsoles combined lightweight, shock-absorbing Phylon foam with responsive forefoot and heel Zoom Air, while carbon fibre shanks and lateral outriggers brought stability and reliable herringbone tread patterns delivered traction. Kobe’s unforgettable performances in each shoe earned consecutive scoring champion awards, paving the way for future success.

Eric Avar was brought in as lead designer from the Nike Kobe 3. He innovated immediately, crafting a TPU netting that enhanced durability, breathability and containment without restricting movement. This helped Kobe become league MVP before the release of 2009’s iconic Kobe 4. Inspired by a football boot, this revolutionary low-top was fast, lightweight and manoeuvrable, with Flywire lacing, rearfoot Zoom Air and a well-structured heel counter that provided outstanding lockdown. It took Kobe to a fourth NBA title and first Finals MVP accolade. The next two models refined the low-top concept: the championship-winning 5 through heat-bonded overlays alongside a decoupled heel, heartbeat tread and forefoot Zoom Air, and the stunning 6 via a dual-layer memory foam insole and a unique upper covered in snake-like scales.

The Kobe 7 introduced removable inserts, one more supportive, with Cushlon foam and a high sleeve, the other more speed-focused, with dual Zoom Air units and a low-cut ankle wrap. Its minimalist, lightweight successor was the first Nike Basketball shoe to have an engineered mesh upper, while its drop-in Lunarlon midsole prioritised mobility and court feel. Kobe’s famous Achilles injury informed the boxing-boot-inspired high collar of the lightweight, manoeuvrable Kobe 9, which debuted Flyknit alongside a well-structured heel counter featuring supportive carbon-fibre support wings. The Nike Kobe 10 then returned to a low-top style, with a distinctive rubber midsole wrap, sharkskin-like upper and multidirectional, racecar-inspired tread that incorporated Nike-Free grooves for fast, controlled movement.

During his final season, Kobe partnered with Avar one last time to create the Nike Kobe 11. It delivered speed, stability and control through classic features like a sturdy heel counter, dynamic Flywire and a Lunarlon midsole with heel Zoom Air. Its TPU-reinforced Flyknit upper offered greater durability and flexibility, while its lack of a midfoot shank enhanced mobility. Kobe gave it the perfect send off by scoring an incredible 60 points in his final game.

In 2018, Nike launched the Kobe 1 Protro – a ‘Performance Retro’ updated with a full-length Zoom Air unit. Since then, most Kobes have become Protros, with performance upgrades encompassing cushioning, traction and upper design. They have proven remarkably popular, as demonstrated by the Kobe 5 and 6 Protros being the most worn shoes in week one of the 2025-26 NBA season.
