Free Golf shoes
Back in 2012, Tiger Woods challenged Nike to create an elite golfing silhouette using the brand’s Free technology. Nike Free running shoes had already been providing athletes with the liberated feeling of barefoot movement for over a decade, and Woods wanted to replicate that experience of comfort and flexibility on the golf course. The resulting shoe was a big success, paving the way for future designs and eventually leading to 2024’s Nike Free Golf.
The Free Golf features a waterproof upper which blends synthetic leather and textiles for durability. A cushioned insole and padded collar enhance comfort around the foot, while the plush, mesh tongue incorporates a woven patch with lace loops through the centre to hold it in place. Brio cables anchored to the sole and emerging from the flanks form the main eyelets, thus ensuring a strong, secure yet lightweight fit, and a firm plastic heel clip adds stability. Lastly, reflective tabs bring a hint of luminosity to each side of the forefoot.
Flexible Nike Free technology covers the front half of the sole unit, facilitating movement that is free, easy and incredibly comfortable. This also makes it the most low-profile of Nike’s golf shoes, which enhances the natural underfoot feeling and allows excellent control through the swing. Meanwhile, the heel is supported by a sturdier piece of foam to keep things stable across the varied terrain encountered on a golf course. Wet traction rubber has been used to produce varied tread patterns on the outsole, with blocky lugs at the forefoot and deep ridges through the heel for reliable grip in a range of conditions.
Aesthetically, the Nike Free Golf has the sleek, sporty look of a running shoe. Branding is minimal, with mismatched Swooshes adding intrigue along the flanks and another logo etched into the outsole. The insole features a Move to Zero logo, which indicates the use of at least 20% recycled content within the design.
Throughout 2024, the Free Golf was worn by Nike athlete Nelly Korda as she experienced her most successful year on tour to date. The world number one wore a variety of stylish colourways as she claimed seven victories, including her second major at the coveted Chevron Championship, in the process helping showcase the shoe’s performance capabilities. In 2025, Nike honoured Korda’s affinity for the Free Golf by designing a special edition with and for her. Its elegant white upper is enriched with vibrant accents that represent her star sign, Leo, and her love of lions, while a golden chain hung around the collar is adorned with charms inspired by her life and career.
The Nike Free Golf harnesses comfort-focused barefoot running technology to offer players the experience of natural, effortless movement as they traverse the course, while its stability features ensure a smooth, confident swing, making every round of golf a joy.
