Free Metcon training shoes 

Nike has always been an innovator, but in 2018, the brand took invention to the next level with the launch of its Free Metcon series. Combining the barefoot flexibility of its Free technology with the stability of its Metcon line, this hybrid training shoe performs well across a wide range of workout routines.

The original Nike Free Metcon features a lightweight, durable, TPU-infused mesh upper with an integrated tongue for snug, sock-like comfort and a supportive TPU heel and ankle cage that combines with the Flywire lacing to provide a dynamic fit, secure lockdown and firm lateral stability. Two pull tabs make for convenient entry, a roomy forefoot adds extra comfort, and the dual-density midsole includes both soft and dense foams alongside raised sidewalls for cushioning, durability and ankle support. On the outsole, hexagonal blocks with tri-star lugs deliver excellent multi-surface traction as hard-wearing rubber increases durability around the big toe and heel. A midfoot wrap facilitates rope climbs, a plastic heel clip improves stability and Nike Free forefoot grooves produce outstanding flexibility for natural movement.

The Nike Free Metcon 2 came out in 2019 with an updated TPU cage that contains the midfoot, therefore allowing a more streamlined lacing system without Flywire. Lower cushioning grounds the foot, while the bottom heel clip has been removed along with the tongue pull tab. Minor outsole adjustments improve grip, deeper grooves increase flexibility and the upgraded midfoot wrap makes rope climbing easier.

Nike made more significant changes on 2020’s Free Metcon 3, giving it a softer, more breathable double-layered mesh upper with a narrower shape and reinstating the tongue pull tab and Flywire. Fused overlays provide durability and higher sidewalls add ankle stability as the TPU cage has been removed along with the midfoot wrap. Lastly, the outsole’s rippling tread patterns and minimal rubber coverage create a lightweight feel without compromising grip or flexibility. Both the Nike Free Metcon 4 and 5 reuse this sole, with the former featuring a chain-link mesh upper, secure ribbon lacing and an elastic heel strap for improved lockdown, and the latter incorporating a close-knit mesh and sturdy plastic heel clip.

In 2024, Nike launched the Free Metcon 6 with a host of thrilling updates including a breathable yet supportive engineered mesh upper with a more rounded toe for improved agility. Reliable Flywire lacing returns, and the midsole features full-length soft foam directly under the foot alongside a bulked up heel of dense foam for stability, comfort and shock absorption. Its hard-wearing outsole has been flattened out to provide a more stable platform, with increased rubber coverage and an improved traction pattern of herringbone lines and Waffle lugs alongside modern, laser-siped grooves that deliver maximum flexibility.
