Nike’s legendary co-founder Bill Bowerman was always known for his innovative footwear concepts. One of the earliest came in 1971, after a famous breakfast time experiment inspired his lightweight, grippy Waffle outsole. The first silhouette to harness this new traction system was nicknamed the ‘Moon Shoe’ for its crater-like imprints, but only a few were made, and it was lost to history. Decades later, it was rediscovered by Bowerman’s son, eventually bringing about the return of the classic Nike Moon Shoe.

The Moon Shoe’s upper is made from lightweight, supple nylon, giving a flexible feel and streamlined fit. A similar material forms the forefoot overlay and eyestay, while smooth leather panels and large Swoosh logos accent the flanks. The heel is supported by a leather counter and a floating tab that can be used to pull the shoe on, with stitched seams for durability and a slim tongue to keep weight down. Bowerman’s Waffle sole forms the shoe’s foundation, its rows of deep, square-shaped rubber lugs providing reliable traction, cushioned bounce-back and natural flexibility. Lastly, a thick foam sockliner ensures plush comfort for everyday wear.

Aesthetically, the Nike Moon Shoe OG remains faithful to Bowerman’s 1971 original. Exaggerated Swooshes curve boldly along the sidewalls, while the tongue displays a retro, Nike-branded patch and another logo punctuates the insole. The jagged-edged overlays add a dynamic touch to balance the soft textures of the leather panels, and some editions have an embroidered Swoosh on the heel. Completing the look is the model’s most standout feature: the charismatic Waffle outsole.

The return of the Moon Shoe was sparked by French fashion designer Simon Porte Jacquemus after he came across the 1970s version during a visit to Nike’s headquarters in the early 2020s. Inspired by its timeless simplicity and throwback style, he began thinking of ways to reinterpret Bowerman’s athletic design for a modern audience. The resulting collaboration was showcased on the Paris runway in January 2025, where onlookers got a glimpse of its chic balletic profile, elegantly ruched nylon upper and sustainable Nike Grind Waffle outsole.

The Nike Moon Shoe x Jacquemus debuted in autumn 2025. It combines the heritage sporting charm of the original with the contemporary trend for minimalist, ballet-inspired lifestyle shoes. Refined Jacquemus branding can be found across the sneaker, and its sophisticated leather lace tips are adorned with diminutive Swooshes for an understated yet elegant touch. The initial launch consisted of three classy colourways, with another trio following in March 2026 ahead of the first general release editions. Known as the Nike Moon Shoe OG, this silhouette is a faithful rendition of Bowerman’s 1971 model which allows sneaker enthusiasts and casual wearers alike to honour his classic design.

When it first came out, the Nike Moon Shoe represented a bold step forwards in traction technology, demonstrating Nike’s ability to drive sporting innovation and forming the basis for the brand’s long-term success. Today’s edition celebrates that heritage in style by offering a versatile everyday sneaker with captivating retro appeal.
