When Nike SB creates new footwear, the sub-label not only has over 20 years of skateboarding designs to draw from, but also multiple decades of sporting heritage. In 2024, these two worlds came together on the Nike SB Vertebrae – a highly functional skate shoe with a captivating aesthetic inspired by retro trainers from the brand’s extensive archives.

The upper of the SB Vertebrae combines layers of suede, leather and textiles into a durable structure that contains and supports yet also breaks in quickly. Its forefoot overlay incorporates perforated zones for ventilation, while the rear panelling connects to the top of the lacing system to improve lockdown. This is further bolstered by the semi-gusseted tongue and the ghillie-loop eyelets, which are protected within a raised eyestay. The thick, cushy tongue then ensures comfort over the instep as the padded heel holds the back of the foot in place. More structural support comes from the sturdy bands worked into its hard-wearing sidewalls as well as the double lines of stitching used to secure the overlays. All of this is achieved while ensuring maximum flexibility, allowing the skater to perform a range of tricks with ease.

The Nike SB Vertebrae is built upon a flat, low-profile sole unit that offers enhanced boardfeel and control alongside reliable stability. Featuring a durable cupsole design, it provides firm impact protection while also being incredibly lightweight and flexible, especially through the forefoot, leading to consistent performance right out of the box. Its outsole has a cellular tread pattern that delivers strong multidirectional grip, with the rubber extending upwards over the lower part of the upper to stabilise the sidewalls and increase durability around the heel and toe.

Visually, the SB Vertebrae takes its cues from retro running shoes and archival Air Max silhouettes, producing a throwback sporty look. The distinctive ribbed sidewalls from which its name is derived are the standout feature, each one centred around a classy Swoosh logo. Intriguing design lines decorating the sole stylishly echo this aesthetic, while a leather tab running up the middle of the tongue adds a sophisticated touch. Its peak is adorned with Nike SB lettering, with more printed onto the insole and embossed across the rubber protecting the heel. Lastly, a Swoosh has been etched into the midfoot of the outsole to complete the minimal branding of this suave silhouette.
