In the early 1960s, adidas produced a state-of-the-art track shoe named after the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Its adjustable spikes and lightweight build helped multiple athletes win medals at the Games, and in the decades that followed, the Tokyo reached a broader audience, becoming a popular running shoe around the world. In 2024, the brand reimagined this sleek trainer as part of its lifestyle-oriented, icon-celebrating Originals range.
The upper of the adidas Tokyo comes in smooth, shiny leather, with a soft inner lining that provides a snug, comfortable fit. Its slim tongue sits behind traditional lacing that ties up through a serrated eyestay. In fact, all the overlays on the Tokyo have strikingly jagged edges, from the narrow toe panel to the criss-crossing bands on the heel and the familiar 3-Stripes logos on the flanks.
Underfoot, the Tokyo features a low-profile sole unit with lightweight cushioning and a flat rubber outsole whose all-over coarse texture provides reliable traction. This ensures that the shoe retains the minimalist character of the original silhouette while also being practical for daily use.
Many adidas Tokyo colourways feature throwback tones, while others have been given more contemporary palettes to offer a range of retro and modern styles. Each has classy branding effects such as an adidas Trefoil logo stamped subtly into the outsole, with another etched more boldly into a square-shaped emblem on the tongue.
