Tech Fleece clothing

Nike began producing technical clothing in the late-1970s, with sports garments like the weather-resistant Windrunner jacket. Building on this legacy, designers Jarrett Reynolds and Michael Leon launched a 2005 side project to develop innovative new performance apparel, eventually resulting in Nike’s iconic Tech Fleece.

Nike Tech Fleece is a cutting-edge, three-layered material consisting of a spongy, insulating spacer foam that offers excellent heat retention between two pieces of double-sided jersey fabric for a plush feeling inside and out. Instead of traditional stitching, no-sew edges make Tech Fleece smooth, seamless and incredibly easy to wear, while its lightweight, mobile design allows the wearer to remain warm and comfortable without being weighed down.

Within a few years of Tech Fleece’s 2013 debut, the range included jackets, hoodies and trousers, and in 2016, the fabric was combined with Tech Knit performance yarns for even greater breathability and thermoregulation. Basketball superstar LeBron James was recruited for the release campaign along with renowned NBA players Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, tennis champion Rafael Nadal and football legend Neymar. These elite athletes popularised Nike Tech Fleece amongst a wider audience, with Durant describing it as “wearable in any situation”. Meanwhile, in Europe and the United Kingdom, Tech Fleece tracksuits were worn by rappers like Skepta as the collection became a beloved item of streetwear amongst music subcultures.

Although these celebrity influences contributed to Nike Tech Fleece’s success, its technical abilities have always been important, keeping people warm and comfortable in harsh, hectic urban environments. The three-layered build has remained at its core, with improved materials enhancing durability and insulation over the years. Features like articulated utility sleeves and tape-reinforced Tech pockets have been added and others removed, including the drawstring hood, which was replaced by a seamless bonded collar in 2018.

Such changes kept Tech Fleece relevant into the 2020s, as did the help of celebrities, most notably leading British rapper Central Cee, who made headlines for his casual outfit, complete with Nike joggers, at the 2022 British Fashion Awards. One year later, Tech Fleece celebrated its 10th anniversary with multiple releases including the fashion-focused ‘Re-Imagined’ collection, whose refined garments incorporated an enhanced fabric that offered greater comfort and warmth. Around the same time, Canadian rapper Drake debuted his Tech Fleece collection under the collaborative Nocta sub-label, its loose-fitting hoodies and wide-legged trousers inspiring Nike to release more laidback options of its own.

Today, Nike Tech Fleece encompasses a wide range of sportswear, from heritage-inspired Windrunner jackets to football shorts and even baby overalls. Each piece features soft, low-bulk jersey fabric for premium comfort and a snug, lightweight fit and feel, with articulated seams, Tech pockets and Futura logos adding a classic finish. This ensures that, while many wear it as a style statement, others use it as a sports garment, including elite football clubs like Paris Saint-Germain and national squads such as England and France, who Nike supply with Tech Fleece apparel.

Warm and comfortable but also lightweight and manoeuvrable, Nike Tech Fleece is more than just a functional piece of performance equipment, it is a cultural phenomenon at the intersection of sport, music and fashion.
