Kobe Bryant’s Nike signature series has produced many beloved basketball shoes since its 2006 inception. In 2014, following a run of agile low-tops, Kobe switched to a supportive high-top to aid his return from an Achilles injury. Working with legendary designer Eric Avar, he created the unique Nike Kobe 9, which returned a decade later as a Protro model enhanced for the modern game.

The Kobe 9 was the first Nike Basketball shoe to feature a Flyknit upper, giving it a seamless construction and a snug, sock-like fit along with lightweight durability and accurate proprioception. Designed to encourage natural movement, this flexible material also forms the high-cut collar, providing ankle support without compromising agility. Strong, dynamic Flywire lacing ensures containment through the midfoot, while the heel is bolstered by a large, structured counter with carbon fibre support wings for lateral stability. The wide, quilted tongue incorporates large ventilation holes for added comfort, and both internal and external layers of lightweight fused panelling increase longevity without impacting mobility.

The Nike Kobe 9 Protro has a full-length, drop-in React foam midsole that delivers comfort, responsiveness and impact protection. Designed for top-tier court feel, its contours curve naturally with the foot, while its textured surface reduces slippage and its grooved underside increases flexibility for uninhibited movement. This is further improved by the thin yet durable rubber outsole, whose pressure-mapped tread supports controlled, nimble footwork and court connection alongside excellent traction and smooth transitions. Lastly, an outrigger has been added to increase overall stability.

The Kobe 9 is also rich in storytelling details. Its exaggerated collar was inspired by Bryant’s time observing the great Manny Pacquiao moving with nimble speed in a boxing shoe, while its classic Swooshes and ‘Sheath’ logos are accompanied by two lines of the ‘Kobe Code’. These translate to ‘Masterpiece’ and the Latin phrase ‘veni, vidi, vici’, referencing Kobe’s unmatched dedication and his desire for swift, decisive victories. Nine bands of stitching then adorn the heel in a captivating nod to the post-surgery sutures in his Achilles.

Nike created hype for the Kobe 9 by releasing new colourways of its predecessors in the weeks prior to its launch. Unfortunately, having returned in December 2013, Kobe soon picked up another injury and was unable to debut his latest signature silhouette. Although he joined designer Eric Avar and Nike CEO Mark Parker for a special release event, it was his Lakers teammate Nick Young who first showcased the Kobe 9 ‘Inspiration’ on court in January 2014, before the striking ‘Masterpiece’ became the official launch colourway in February.

Throughout 2014, Nike released different versions of the Kobe 9, such as the Elite and the EM (Engineered Mesh) low-top, in colourways celebrating inspirational artists and musicians like Pablo Picasso and Michael Jackson. Ten years later, Nike debuted the Kobe 9 Protro on his birthday – 23rd August – in the elegant ‘Halo’ colourway, which was followed by the EM Low Protro and a more accessible low-top with a knit mesh upper and TPU heel counter.

The Nike Kobe 9 blends lightweight containment, flexible traction and springy cushioning with powerful storytelling all while enhancing natural movement for maximum speed and agility alongside a distinctive aesthetic.
