Air Monarch sneakers
In the early 2000s, Nike decided to create an accessible training shoe offering all-day comfort. The brand interviewed fathers out with their families during the summer holidays to discover what they needed in an everyday silhouette. Their answers informed the iconic Air Monarch, which would come to be known as the ultimate dad shoe.
Launched in 2001, the original Nike Air Monarch had a leather upper with layered leather panelling held down by dual lines of stitching for outstanding durability. Conceived as a versatile cross-trainer, it featured generous padding and came in variable-width sizing to accommodate all foot types. Its sole blended soft foam and cushy encapsulated Air, providing maximum comfort as its sturdy rubber outsole offered reliable traction.
The utilitarian construction and accessibility of the debut Monarch made it a widespread success, so when the Air Monarch 2 came out in 2003, it had only minor changes. Designed by Jason Mayden, who took inspiration from the typical American father relaxing after a long day at work, it incorporated a chunkier tongue and more sculpted shape for even greater comfort. Mayden also updated the tread to include a sports-inspired pivot circle and altered its style by crafting a more distinctive Swoosh logo that set the Monarch apart from similar models.
In 2005, Nike made more small tweaks to the Air Monarch 3, upgrading the herringbone tread to increase traction and stability while allowing the full-length encapsulated Air cushioning to maintain the series’ trademark comfort. This dependable shoe carried the series for another four years until the Nike Air Monarch 4 came out. Building on its predecessors, the Monarch 4 went with the tried-and-tested layered upper made of durable real and synthetic leather panelling, with a secure lacing system featuring central lace loops and extra top eyelets to firmly contain the foot. Textile mesh side panels and ventilation slits added a touch of breathability and its heel pull tab made for easy on and off, while the outsole’s varied traction patterns were divided by four large forefoot grooves to provide flexibility and grip. Lastly, lightweight cushioning comfort came from the familiar blend of soft Phylon foam and Nike Air.
The Nike Air Monarch 4 was a successful model throughout the 2010s, particularly after Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll began wearing it on the touchline of high-profile NFL games. Carroll was a big fan of the shoe’s utilitarian design and versatile wearability, which saw it become one of Nike’s best-selling silhouettes in 2013. Well-known sportspeople like NBA star Russell Westbrook and skater Eric Koston also adopted the Monarch, and, towards the end of the decade, a trend for Y2K dad shoes emerged, putting the retro classic at the forefront of contemporary fashion. Nike leaned into this movement, making special editions for Carroll and partnering with the likes of luxury streetwear brand John Elliot and renowned menswear designer Martine Rose to craft captivating collaborative colourways. The Monarch’s popularity has only grown since, with regular releases of both new and vintage versions for modern sneaker enthusiasts to discover.
The Nike Air Monarch is a long-running series of versatile trainers built to be durable and comfortable. With its stylish, sporty look and retro dad shoe vibes, the Monarch is a classy sneaker ideal for all-day, everyday wear.
