Nike’s classic Air Rift originally came out in 1996 as a barefoot-style running shoe inspired by elite Kenyan athletes. Thirty years later, following its successful return in the lifestyle category, the popular silhouette was reinvented by Kim Kardashian’s NikeSKIMS sub-label, becoming the elegant SKIMS Rift.

The NikeSKIMS Rift features an upper made of lightweight, technical mesh with sleek, no-sew reinforcements for enhanced durability. Airy and breathable, it remains open over the top of the foot, allowing the wearer to slip it on and off with ease. Meanwhile, the adjustable midfoot strap incorporates a straightforward Velcro fastening system that facilitates swift on-the-go use while ensuring a snug, secure fit. At the heel, a slim yet sturdy heel clip bolsters rearfoot support without adding bulk, and at the forefoot, the split toe encourages natural alignment for improved movement and control.

Underfoot, the SKIMS Rift pairs a low-to-the-ground midsole of soft foam with a cushy insole to provide comfort and a barefoot feel. This helps the wearer to achieve natural balance, while the full-length outsole delivers firm traction via a series of S-shaped lugs. Its durable rubber surface extends upwards around the heel to further increase stability, and a series of grooves offer supple flexibility.

Aesthetically, the NikeSKIMS Rift is a chic reimagining of the iconic Air Rift. It celebrates barefoot heritage with a sleek, low-profile build and minimal co-branding that evokes balletic grace and style. Launched as NikeSKIMS’ first ever footwear in January 2026, the silhouette was promoted by Kim Kardashian herself, who described the original Rift as a “90s icon” and her updated edition as “minimalist, sleek and flattering”.

In March 2026, the silhouette became a key part of NikeSKIMS’ new head-to-toe system of dress. Inspired by the “modern ballerina”, this collection represents “grace in motion and strength in form”, which is reflected in the use of a luxurious satin upper on the updated SKIMS Rift. For the launch campaign, talented singer, rapper, dancer and actress LISA showcased the gentle charm of the glossy ‘Silt Red’ colourway in a stylish, ballet-inspired short film.

With its lightweight, flexible materials, nimble construction and classy, stripped back aesthetic, the NikeSKIMS Rift effortlessly combines casual comfort and refined elegance.
