The Nike Vapor goes back to the early 2000s, when the legendary Roger Federer helped the brand create a fast, lightweight tennis shoe. In 2025, the Vapor 12 built upon this heritage with innovative performance features designed to return the iconic series to its original values.

The Nike Vapor 12 features a lightweight engineered mesh upper with flexible polyurethane bands covering the medial flank, toe box and lateral forefoot. These protect high-wear areas during foot drags, while the lateral side is supported by a full-length TPU Footframe that wraps around the heel and provides firm stability for side-to-side movements. Lockdown comes from the sturdy cuffed eyelets, the semi-gusseted tongue, the stiff heel counter and the internal midfoot bands which hug the foot as the laces are tightened for a snug yet adaptive fit. The plush tongue is held in place by a central lace loop and combines with the softly padded heel to offer comfort throughout.

The midsole of the Vapor 12 incorporates full-length foam for support and comfort, with a large, top-loaded Zoom Air unit bringing added responsiveness and shock absorption to the heel. A bottom-loaded midfoot shank enhances stability and improves lateral transitions while also reducing weight by replacing the heavier rubber from its predecessor to keep the shoe nimble. A lightweight high-abrasion rubber compound forms the split outsole, making it durable without reducing agility or speed, and its herringbone grip lines produce reliable traction across a range of surfaces, facilitating precise, confident movement and allowing smooth, controlled slides. Nike has also released a version with a full-length herringbone outsole featuring Claybreaker technology that prevents debris build-up for better clay court traction.

Aesthetically, the Nike Vapor 12 is inspired by the classic Vapor 6, with a sleek, low-profile design. Its rippling topographical bands and translucent TPU frame create a distinctive look as mismatched Swooshes decorate the flanks. Lastly, stylised Vapor lettering adorns the heel spine and tongue, thus completing the shoe’s stylishly minimalist appearance.

Until 2022, the Nike Vapor was showcased by Roger Federer, but more recently, Spanish world number 1 Carlos Alcaraz has represented the Vapor 12 on court. His exciting, dynamic playstyle perfectly matches the shoe’s design, and he has repeatedly demonstrated its lightweight, agile build with multiple Grand Slam victories across 2025 and 2026 in various Player Exclusive models, including a vibrant green edition that he wore when becoming the youngest ever men’s player to complete the career Grand Slam at the 2026 Australian Open.
