In 2017, market research group NPD revealed a list of the best-selling athletic sneakers of the year. It contained a host of Air Jordans and classics like the Converse Chuck Taylor, but the unexpected winner was the Nike Tanjun. Named after the Japanese word for “simplicity”, this understated silhouette features a stripped-back design with mass appeal.
The Nike Tanjun has a flexible mesh upper that is incredibly lightweight and highly breathable. Combined with the generous padding on the collar and tongue, this ensures soft comfort for everyday wear, while the roomy inner accommodates multiple foot types and the traditional lacing offers a secure fit. Its lightweight foam midsole provides a soft, spongy feeling underfoot, with a slight flare at the heel for stability. Waffle-inspired rubber lugs form the outsole, delivering reliable grip and leaving large cutouts to minimise weight and increase flexibility.
Aesthetically, the Tanjun’s seamless upper creates a clean, contemporary look, with minimalist branding that consists of classic sidewall Swooshes and a Nike-branded tongue patch. Leaning into the silhouette’s ethos of sleek simplicity, the brand has released a wide variety of stylish one- and two-tone colourways since its launch in 2015.
