LeBron James launched his first Nike basketball shoe at the beginning of his career in 2003. Two decades later, James had become one of the greatest stars in NBA history, while at 20 models, his signature line was one of the brand’s longest-running. As his record-breaking 21st season approached, Nike released the next iteration in this innovative series, the outstanding LeBron 21.

The upper of the Nike LeBron 21 consists of a lightweight, engineered mono-mesh base protected by a durable leather shell, with a Nike Sphere fabric lining that provides enhanced temperature-regulation and moisture-wicking while also conforming comfortably to the foot. Large ventilation holes in the tongue and smaller perforations on the flanks offer breathability, as the plush quilting on the underside of the thick, cushy tongue delivers maximum comfort. The stiff, supportive heel counter is softened by generous padding, working with the 360-degree zonal sidewall cables to firmly contain the foot. These form the central eyelets of the lacing system, which also incorporates reinforced eyelets high up on the collar alongside thick laces and a central tongue loop to further improve lockdown. Lastly, a small, foldover heel tab makes pulling the shoe on that much easier.

The LeBron 21’s foundation features a durable, supportive Cushlon 2.0 foam carrier with two highly responsive Zoom Air units. A top-loaded, 6mm-thick articulated Zoom Turbo airbag delivers powerful energy return and propulsion through the forefoot without compromising court feel, while a bottom-loaded, 13mm Zoom Air cushion offers shock absorption and bounce at the heel. Extra snap and rigidity comes from the top-loaded TPU midfoot shank, which combines with the co-moulded guardrail wrapping around the heel to provide excellent stability. Multidirectional tread patterns cover the full-length rubber outsole for reliable traction and durability on indoor courts. Its wide forefoot and heel create a stable platform for the foot, while the thick, removable insole increases comfort.

As well as supporting elite-level performance, the Nike LeBron 21 excels in storytelling. Inspired by LeBron’s desire to protect his daughter, Zhuri, its aesthetic is based on the striated shell of the oyster, which forms a defensive casing around a precious pearl. The eye-catching zonal cables mimic these striations, while the first run of colourways released in autumn 2023, including the Tahitian, Conchiolin, Freshwater and Abalone, feature pearlescent finishes and other aquatic references. The distinctive cables of the LeBron 21 became even more apparent after its mid-season refresh in 2024, which removed the outer shell for a more lightweight, flexible feel and charismatic appearance. Alongside this oceanic theme, the LeBron 21 contains classy design details, with James’ NBA titles honoured on the insole and his birth year on the heel tab.
