KD 4 basketball shoes
Nike signed Kevin Durant for his debut season with the Seattle Supersonics in 2007. His Rookie of the Year award set a strong foundation for their partnership, and in 2009, they released the first of many KD basketball trainers. The Nike KD 4 came out in late 2011 and quickly established itself as an iconic model. As such, it was honoured with a 2024 retro release, making a triumphant return to both the court and the street.
The upper of the Nike KD 4 features Hyperfuse panelling which combines various heat-fused layers for outstanding durability. Once broken in, it offers decent flexibility, while the mesh tongue and midfoot vents add breathability, and the structured, lightly-padded heel comfortably secures the rearfoot. Reinforced eyelets are paired with a broad, Adaptive Fit midfoot retention strap that is sewn directly into the footbed for firm, snug-fitting lockdown.
The KD 4 is supported by a lightweight Phylon foam midsole with a responsive Zoom Air unit in the forefoot. A bottom-loaded TPU shank spans the midfoot, adding a snappy feel and combining with the lateral outrigger and the raised heel wall to increase stability. Reliable traction comes from the thunderbolt tread patterns, with linear grip lines on the medial side to enhance control when pivoting and pushing off. Flex points have been added throughout the chunky, durable outsole to improve agility on court.
With its sleek, low-profile design, bold midfoot strap and distinctive branding, the Nike KD 4 is as stylish as it is functional. A large KD logo adorns the heel, Swooshes decorate the strap and forefoot, and inspirational messages have been etched into the outsole. When it originally came out for the 2011-12 NBA season, Nike crafted various captivating colourways honouring Durant. Alongside designs celebrating his time with the Oklahoma City Thunder, there was the toy-inspired ‘Nerf’, the vibrant ‘Weatherman’, which reflects his childhood desire to become a meteorologist, and the elegant ‘Aunt Pearl’, whose bright pink tones and pearlised details commemorate his late aunt.
The KD 4 coincided with a memorable season for Durant in which he achieved an All-Star MVP award, a third consecutive scoring title, an Olympic gold medal and a first NBA Finals appearance. Still playing at the top of the sport when the retro release came in 2024, he returned to wearing the KD 4, once again showcasing its remarkable performance design and stunning look.
Despite being over a decade old, the Nike KD 4 remains an excellent court shoe, offering responsive speed and solid containment alongside a durable build and cooling breathability. With a range of stylish colourways celebrating Durant’s life and career, the KD 4 is also a great lifestyle option for basketball fans and sneaker enthusiasts alike.
