During the mid-2010s, Nike embarked on an exciting project that would change the world of distance running shoes. Using innovative combinations of cutting-edge foams and carbon-fibre plates, the brand ushered in a maximalist revolution with a collection of record-breaking new designs. Regular fine-tuning in the years since has led to even more high-performance silhouettes, including 2026’s outstanding Alphafly 4.

The Nike Alphafly 4 features an enhanced Atomknit upper designed to offer a precise, secure fit and lightweight breathability. It does so via a seamless, zonal setup that combines substantial areas of open-hole mesh with more structured zones around the heel. The integrated tongue and moulded sockliner further improve lockdown, and sturdy midfoot cables connect to the lacing system for even greater containment. A convenient pull tab adorns the heel, where targeted padding ensures comfort while keeping weight to an absolute minimum. Lastly, notches along the laces prevent them coming undone so as not to interrupt the wearer during a race.

The sole unit of the Alphafly 4 represents a significant upgrade on its predecessor, with tried-and-tested ZoomX joined by the latest ZoomX LT cushioning. Nike’s lightest and most energy-returning foam, it delivers improved responsiveness, smoother transitions and increased comfort over long distances. Set within the stacked layers of foam, whose near 40mm heel and 8mm drop provide fantastic support, is a wide, full-length Flyplate that carefully balances springy propulsion and stability. Meanwhile, the curved heel and dramatic forefoot rocker create a forward-rolling momentum for even better transitions. Two energising Zoom Air units increase the bouncy feeling at toe-off, their updated design being both softer and quieter underfoot than previous iterations. This elite midsole is supported by a lightweight Fast Shot outsole that is durable and incredibly grippy. Wide in the forefoot, it is also stable, while its rubber coverage is restricted to only those areas where it is needed so as not to restrict the runner’s speed with extra bulk.

As well as being an exceptional running shoe, the Nike Alphafly 4 is bold and stylish. The signature exaggerated Swoosh swoops along its lateral flank and forefoot, with a smaller logo on the medial side and embroidered Alphafly branding on the tongue. All of the aesthetic elements have been thoughtfully designed to minimise weight, and the elegant off-white launch colourway incorporates deep black and brilliant orange-red accents for a striking look. This edition came out in autumn 2026, with the release boosted by the words of elite Ethiopian distance runner Addisu Gobena, who, fresh from setting a new course record at the Sydney Marathon, explained how it helps him push through tough moments when fatigue sets in during the latter parts of a race.

The Nike Alphafly 4 builds on the remarkable success of its predecessors to push the boundaries of long-distance running. Designed to cater to a broader range of athletes, its powerful combination of propulsive cushioning, comfort and stability facilitates improved performance across both half and full marathons.
