In the 1980s, New Balance introduced the 500 Series to serve the growing number of road-to-trail runners. Each model featured technological advancements, and in 1988, the brand launched a shoe combining several of these into an accessible silhouette known as the 574.

The upper of the New Balance 574 features breathable mesh, with suede panelling layered up over the top for maximum durability and protection, particularly around the ankle. Synthetic leather forms the heel overlay and sidewall logos, while a plastic clip supports the back of the foot, adding structure and keeping the foot secure. Internally, the last shape offers plenty of wiggle room, and the softly padded fabric lining is both comfortable and durable.

The 574’s sole unit was originally built to take runners from road to trail, making it incredibly supportive. Its impressive midsole combines two layers of foam, the lower firm and stable, the upper bringing a softer feel directly underneath the foot. Reliable ENCAP technology, which incorporates a sturdy polyurethane casing around the lightweight EVA foam cushioning, provides further stability, as does the overall width of the sole. The hard-wearing rubber outsole has thick, deeply set lugs to deliver outstanding traction over both wet and dry surfaces. While optimally suited to urban pathways, this powerful outsole also works well on rugged, off-road terrain, thus adding to the 574’s versatility.

Stylistically, the New Balance 574 is a highly versatile silhouette, with a classy retro sports aesthetic and heritage branding effects. These include New Balance lettering on the heel, bold N logos on the flanks and a woven tongue patch with “Classic 574” embroidery. The blocky panelling and ridged heel clip enhance the old-school running shoe vibes, completing the stylish throwback look.

Since its original release, the New Balance 574 has gone through both technological and visual evolutions, becoming a globally renowned model. From the skater-friendly Numeric to the sustainable Core, with its recycled materials and bio-based content, the platform-soled 574+ and the golf-specific 574 Greens, the modern lineup includes designs to suit all preferences and styles, while the Legacy version is the most faithful rendition of the 1988 running shoe.

Following early 574 collaborations with artists like Boston’s Josh ‘Wisdumb’ Spivack and Eric Haze, the silhouette became a popular model for creative interpretations. Notable editions include Japanese streetwear brand atmos’ celebratory ‘A10’, Junya Watanabe’s hiking-inspired ‘eYe’, brand ambassador Jaden Smith’s recycled version and sneaker boutique Bodega’s brightly coloured 574 Legacy two-pack. In 2021, Italian fashion label Miu Miu showcased its business-casual New Balance 574 on the runway at Paris Fashion Week, and footwear designer Salehe Bembury created the utterly unique ‘Yurt’ edition, with its bulked up sole and offbeat heel whistle. Meanwhile, through 2023 and 2024, innovative apparel brand Stone Island crafted several 574 Legacy colourways in suave tones based on their material expertise, further boosting the silhouette’s fashion credentials.

Today, the New Balance 574 is an iconic and enduring symbol of the brand, beloved around the world for its timeless look, utilitarian design and outstanding comfort.
