New Balance relaunched its 1906 running shoe in 2022, over a decade after it had first been released. The brand improved its performance by updating the sole unit, giving it a new name as well: the 1906R. It proved to be a highly versatile sneaker, and several variants appeared in the years that followed. One of these was the hard-wearing New Balance 1906U, whose “U” designation indicates its utilitarian design.

Built to resist the elements, the 1906U has a strong outer made from tough materials such as Ripstop, technical mesh and durable leather. Its angular panelling is more extensive than on the standard model, delivering greater protection, particularly on the forefoot and sidewalls. The trademark TPU heel cage remains, bringing its usual supportive properties, as does the N-lock lacing system, which cleverly incorporates the New Balance logos on the flanks for secure lockdown and a bold look. Rope-style laces add a sturdy feel, and the tongue features a more breathable mesh. Meanwhile, the heel of the 1906U displays an emblem of three tapering stripes for a stylish aesthetic touch that unites it with the core model of the series.

The sole unit of the New Balance 1906U is equally robust, with ABZORB cushioning to withstand impacts on off-road trails, and N-ergy Gel inserts alongside ABZORB SBS pods to support the heel. Structural stability is provided by a Stability Web midfoot arch, helping the wearer to stay steady on their feet, and the Ndurance rubber outsole is both durable and grippy.

The 1906U was released in 2024 off the back of a distinctive collaborative sneaker from fashion labels INVINCIBLE and N. HOOLYWOOD that introduced plush materials like suede to the upper, added a pull tab to the heel and changed the lacing to a drawcord fastening system for a secure fit. In fact, the New Balance 1906U’s first year saw it involved in various collaborations, including with creative company The Whitaker Group, streetwear boutique Concepts and Los Angeles apparel brand Bricks & Wood, who crafted the striking ‘Echoes of a Butterfly’ colourway.
