The ASICS Gel-Nimbus series has long been known for its exceptional cushioning and support. Since its introduction in the late 1990s, it has gone through various iterations, including 2007’s Gel-Nimbus 9. Initially constructed to carry athletes with neutral or supinated feet over long distances, the shoe’s excellent fit and super-soft cushioning made it one of the best selling models of its time, and in 2022, it was honoured with a retro release.

The foundation of the ASICS Gel-Nimbus 9 is a highly supportive sole unit with an updated design. Its midsole uses a segmented approach which delivers greater stability, while the familiar Gel inserts visible in the forefoot and heel provide the same high levels of shock absorption that made the original so popular. In addition, the ASICS Trusstic system has been applied through the arch of the foot to support flexible movement and prevent the foot from rolling. Underfoot, a grippy rubber outsole with a complex tread pattern that produces strong traction.

On the upper, the Gel-Nimbus 9 retains the classic 2007 design, featuring a layered construction of breathable mesh and synthetic leather panels. The overlays across the forefoot follow the brand’s biomorphic fit system, which helps the shoe to stretch when needed while also remaining rigid enough to protect the toes. This ensures that it moulds to the foot, thus giving a secure and comfortable fit.

Designed to replicate the aesthetic of the original ASICS Gel-Nimbus 9, the 2022 version has been built using high-quality materials and heritage detailing. The ASICS logo decorates each flank and corrugated panels on the toe, heel and tongue give it a bold, industrial feel. Together with the Y2K-look of the mesh and the vintage colour-blocking, this produces a profoundly stylish sneaker that appears both retro and modern at the same time.

The Gel-Nimbus 9 was relaunched with the help of innovative designer Kiko Kostadinov, who has worked with the brand since 2000. He created two variations on the revamped silhouette with unique textures and colour combinations that brought added hype to the general release colourways. Since then, distinctive collaborations with Procell co-founder Jessica Gonsalves, Japanese streetwear label Wind and Sea and sustainable Danish fashion brand (Di)vision, amongst others, have ensured that the silhouette continues to thrive.
