Pegasus

During the 1970s, Nike was known for its innovative athletic footwear designed by Bill Bowerman. In 1983, his legacy brought about one of the most successful running shoes in the brand’s history: the Nike Pegasus.

Bowerman helped popularise jogging in 1960s America after learning about its health benefits from New Zealand sports coach Arthur Lydiard. His 1967 book led to a countrywide running craze that continued through the 1970s, and by the early 1980s, there were millions of casual runners in need of reliable footwear.

Designers Mark Parker and Bruce Kilgore created a well-balanced, reasonably priced silhouette founded upon a lightweight EVA foam midsole with a supportive Air-Wedge heel unit and a grippy Waffle outsole. On top of this, its breathable yet durable nylon and suede upper featured a stabilising PVC heel counter and a comfortable, form-fitting last shape. The result was the first Pegasus – an all-round running shoe for everyone from beginners to experienced runners with a name symbolising the freedom of floating on air.

When the Nike Pegasus came out in 1983, joggers praised its practicality, comfort and accessible price. It came to be known affectionately as ‘The Peg’, developing into a reliable franchise with variants like the ACG and Racer. However, during the mid-1990s, radical changes such as a visible Air unit were not so well-received, and it was eventually discontinued in 1998.

In 2000, Air Max Plus designer Sean McDowell reinvigorated the Pegasus series by focusing on runners’ needs with an innovative silhouette whose full-length Air unit was ‘baked’ into the Phylon midsole for lightweight comfort. Its stylish retro-futurist aesthetic influenced subsequent models, eventually inspiring the P6000, 2005 and Wave lifestyle sneakers.

Nike expanded the franchise with 2003’s Pegasus Trail and a female-specific model in 2004, and new technologies like Zoom Air were added in the 2010s. Its effectiveness as a training shoe improved, and athletes including Geoffrey Kamworor and Mo Farah wore it, with Farah even helping to design the Pegasus 31.

In 2018, the incredibly popular Pegasus 35 was released, propelling the series into the 2020s, when responsive React foam debuted on the 37th edition. In 2022, Swiss artist Fabian Oefner crafted a dynamic sculpture celebrating the Pegasus’ incredible legacy ahead of its 40th anniversary, and in 2024, it was one of three iconic franchises in Nike’s road running lineup. Focused on responsive cushioning, the Pegasus models included the durable and versatile Icon, featuring ReactX foam and dual Zoom Air units, the Plus, whose full-length ZoomX midsole was lightweight and speed-oriented, and the Premium, whose cutting-edge sole combined ReactX and ZoomX with full-length Zoom Air for a luxurious yet springy underfoot feel.

The Pegasus 41 gained recognition through an early appearance at the 2024 Olympic trials and athletic endorsements from world-record-breaking runners Eliud Kipchoge and Faith Kipyegon, who each helped release their own unique collections. Kipyegon’s included all three Pegasus models as a nod to her use of the series while training for Nike’s Breaking4 Project in June 2025.

The journey of the Nike Pegasus is over four-decades old, but it still provides high-quality running shoes for all athletes. Its unique blend of comfort, durability and responsiveness makes it a great all-rounder and a go-to staple for runners everywhere.
