Air Max 1 '87
The iconic Air Max 1 was designed by Nike legend Tinker Hatfield and released in 1987. Known for being the first of the brand’s sneakers to show off its innovative Air cushioning through a window in the heel, it has been released as a retro version many times over the years, with some honouring the original design and others taking it in new directions. One of those that has stayed true to Tinker’s OG model is the Nike Air Max 1 ‘87.
In line with the 80s design, the Air Max 1 ‘87 has a visible Air Max unit in the heel which is accompanied by soft foam through the rest of the foot to provide excellent levels of comfort. Meanwhile, its rubber outsole features the famous Waffle tread pattern for durable traction.
Its upper has been constructed using a range of premium materials, from airy mesh to luxurious tumbled leather and plush suede. These are arranged in a familiar style, with a large, wavy edged mudguard running around most of the shoe and further overlays on the heel and quarter.
In terms of branding, the Air Max 1 ‘87 displays sidewall swoosh logos, Nike Air embroidery on the heel and a woven tongue patch with more stylish lettering for a heritage look. Either side of this last element are pairs of moulded eyelets that were also an inventive feature of the AM1 model when it was first released. As well as helping to secure the laces, they act as another unique detail to distinguish the design.
Defined by its use of high-quality materials, its classic look and its irresistible retro charm, the Nike Air Max 1 ‘87 is a great way to represent the original sneaker that introduced visible Air technology to the world.
