Nike has long been a pioneer of footwear technologies, but in late 2025, the brand announced an innovation which took a completely new approach. Known as Nike Mind, its design started from neurology instead of foot anatomy or physical needs, leading to a revolutionary sole that uses sensory activation to cause a positive shift in mindset.

Nike Mind is a unique sole unit crafted by neuroscience experts, footwear designers and engineers using data and feedback from top-tier athletes such as footballer Erling Haaland, cricketer Shubman Gill and basketball stars Victor Wembanyama and A’Ja Wilson. A decade in the making, it incorporates 22 individually articulated foam nodes which have been strategically placed to ensure each one independently activates the nerve endings in a different part of the sole. Size and material were carefully considered to balance sensation and comfort for all foot sizes. Meanwhile, the stretchy, water-resistant footbed the nodes are attached to allows multidirectional flex that facilitates their piston-like movement and delivers the appropriate amount of pressure to stimulate the foot without overwhelming it. This action engages corresponding areas of the brain for a stronger mind-body connection that grounds the wearer in their environment and brings them into the present moment.

Mind broke new ground when it was used on two silhouettes released in early 2026. The Mind 001 is a slip-on Mule designed to improve preparation for and recovery from sports and exercise. Its soft, flexible foam upper features a balanced shape that encourages slow, relaxed movement. It has barred medial openings and a perforated knit tongue for breathability, a plush EVA foam midsole for comprehensive comfort and rubber outsole pods on the toe and heel for durable traction. Elegant Swoosh logos and a capsule-shaped heel tab etched with Mind lettering keep things stylishly minimal. Underfoot, the anatomically mapped nodes stimulate the brain with each step, strengthening focus and calming the mind. This helps the wearer achieve a more balanced, resilient mindset, which in turn produces better sporting performance. Meanwhile, during post-activity, the cushy foam nodes gently massage the foot, deepening mindfulness, encouraging relaxation and aiding recovery.

Alongside this, Nike released the Mind 002 as an everyday shoe designed for casual use. It has the exact same sole as the 001, but its neoprene-style knit upper is covered in engineered perforations that provide breathability and a distinctive look. The soft knit tongue incorporates large ventilation holes along the bottom, while its top half features bands of moulded foam padding. More of this plush cushioning appears around the heel, providing a snug, comfortable fit. Lastly, its traditional lacing can be adjusted to achieve different levels of underfoot engagement, allowing the wearer to alter the effects of the Mind sole to their own preferences.
