The Nike Mercurial football boot was first released in 1998, when Ronaldo wore it as he scored goal after goal during some of the greatest years of his career. As a result, it better fits the shape of the foot, particularly around the toe and heel, thus providing outstanding lockdown. Internally, a thin layer of strong material known as the ‘speed cage’ connects the upper securely to the soleplate and therefore reduces foot slippage. Externally, a layer of lightweight, breathable Flyknit enhances ball control with its lightly textured surface and All Conditions Control coating, which grips the ball during contact. As a whole, the upper is thin enough that the player can feel the ball against their foot when executing a range of skills. At the heel, the seam has been offset to limit the amount of strain placed on the Achilles, while the updated lacing system is easy to use and provides a snug fit.

When the Vapor 15 was first released in 2022, the brand produced various stylish versions to suit a range of looks, most of which have a large swoosh down the lateral flank alongside Air Zoom lettering and the word “Air” boldly decorating the medial side for a standout aesthetic. Since then, Brazilian superstar Vinicius Junior has made the football boot his own, acting as part of the launch campaign for a unique collaboration with the Nike Air Max Plus before appearing in the vibrant Mad Brilliance Pack at the 2024 Copa America. Meanwhile, across the Atlantic, players such as Nico Williams wore the same bright pink colourway at the Euro 2024 tournament.
