New Balance’s premium 1906 running shoe first came out in 2009. At the time, it was considered a high-quality piece of athletic footwear and epitomised the mesh runner aesthetic that was popular in the Y2K era. Over a decade later, this style became sought-after in mainstream fashion, so New Balance reimagined the silhouette, launching it in 2022 as the 1906R.

The captivating upper of the New Balance 1906R is derived from the original silhouette, with a highly breathable open-cell mesh punctuated by synthetic overlays that stretch dynamically across the forefoot and flanks. The traditional “N” logos are incorporated into the lacing system, with textile ribbons passing through each one to hold the laces, and therefore the foot, firmly in place. The heel is supported with a structural TPU frame that stabilises the foot, and above this, three stripes form an intriguing, pyramid-like emblem. Besides this, minimal branding on the tongue, forefoot and heel provide a subtle elegance to the shoe’s overall look, which exudes sporty athleisure vibes.

The 1906R features a strong foundation based on the sole unit of the 860v2. Lightweight ACTEVA LITE foam cushions the foot while maintaining good flexibility of movement, and the heel is supported by compression resistant ABZORB SBS pods and durable yet responsive N-ergy Gel inserts for great shock absorption alongside a seamless transition from heel-to-toe. The arch of the foot is reinforced with Stability Web technology, and the outsole is coated in grippy, hard-wearing Ndurance rubber, thus completing the contemporary performance design of the sole.

Since its 2022 release, the New Balance 1906R has been involved in multiple collaborations, which have helped to boost its appeal as a stylish fashion item. In its first year, notable partnerships were established with South Korean label thisisneverthat, Japanese brands atmos and N. HOOLYWOOD and Taiwanese clothing boutique INVINCIBLE. The list of collaborators has only grown over time, with striking sneakers designed by brands like Aimé Leon Dore, AURALEE, Comme des Garçons and GANNI, as well as creative individuals like Action Bronson and Salehe Bembury.
